PALCARE was established in November 2002 in response to a need for more volunteers to support the Supportive, Palliative and Hospice Care Program of the Department of Family and Community Medicine of UP-PGH

Palcare is composed of people who want share their time, knowledge, resources, skills and talents in order to make a difference in other people’s lives. The volunteers are a part of a hospice team along with physicians, nurse clinicians, social workers who visit patients in the wards or in their homes for medical assessment and management, companionship and emotional support, social visits, bedside care, practical support, sourcing for patient needs and training of manpower, assistance in organization and provision of education and training sessions, social and civic endeavors and advocacy. The hospice visits are under the supervision of the program coordinator and the volunteer coordinator.

GOALS:

1. To provide optimal supportive care for chronic and terminally ill patients by alleviating pain through emotional support, companionship, and bedside care. The consultative and collaborative role will be used in that PALCARE volunteers, as part of the Palliative Care Team, will work with and through the attending physician of the Supportive, Palliative and Hospice Care (SPHC) Program of the Department of Family and Community Medicine UP-PGH.

2. To consult and coordinate with a wider group related professionals to serve as an informed and knowledgeable resource (i.e., palliative care doctor, volunteer medical oncologist, ophthalmologist, nurse, physical therapist and others) appropriate to the special skill needed by the patient and the Palliative Care Team to promote the concept of total and holistic care.

3. To recognize and promote ways to meet the special needs of patients and families confronted with chronic, progressive, life threatening and possibly terminal illness.

4. To provide education and skills development to hospital staff, the volunteers, patient primary caregivers through education and training (formal lectures and workshops) and to provide a forum and atmosphere which fosters inquiry and learning.

5. To provide consultation and liaison services to Community Palliative Care providers including family physicians, barangay health workers/volunteers and other community agencies.

6. To encourage people to share their time, skills, resources and knowledge through VOLUNTARISM.

7. To offer a venue for volunteers to showcase their talents.

8. To serve as a venue for camaraderie and fellowship among volunteers.
